Vollie Coleman

March 21, 1937 — October 1, 2022

Bladenboro

Vollie Alfonzie Coleman, 85, of Bladenboro, passed away Saturday, October 01, 2022 at UNC Health at Southeastern. He was preceded in death by his parents, Brock and Mable Coleman and sister, Brockie Hogston.

Vollie leaves behind his wife, Hilda H. Coleman of the home; son, Al Coleman and wife Lisa of Bladenboro; two daughters: Harriett C. Edwards and husband Jeff of Wake Forest, Teresa Coleman of Bladenboro; five sisters: Opal Suggs of Thomasville, Betty Carol Hester of Bladenboro, Peggy Fillinger of Cullman, Alabama, Sandra Fayne of High Point, Karen Alexander of Thomasville and several nieces and nephews.

Following graduation from high school, he enlisted in the US Air Force and served a tour of duty that included an assignment in Japan.  After his honorable discharge, he worked in a variety of roles including furniture manufacturing, tire manufacturing, and residential and commercial construction.  His joy was in serving at his church and supporting his family.

After he retired, he focused full time on his woodworking hobby and, for more than 20 years, built outdoor furniture to sell retail from his wood shop and to sell wholesale to local merchants for retail operations. His swings, Adirondack chairs, gliders, and garden benches can be found all over southeastern North Carolina.  He enjoyed passing time with visitors sitting under a shade tree in an Adirondack chair with a Pepsi and square nabs.  He read multiple newspapers daily to keep up with international, national, state and local news, and he loved to engage anyone willing to chat in conversation.  He studied his Bible daily and loved God supremely.  He would tell you very quickly that his family was second only to God and he loved his family fiercely.

The family will receive friends from 5:30-7:30pm on Monday, October 3rd at Bladen-Gaskins Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. A graveside service will be held at 2pm on Tuesday, October 4th at PineCrest Cemetery with Rev. Warren Hill and Rev. Kevin Kinlaw officiating service.

Flowers are welcome though memorial gifts to Singletary Baptist Church general fund are encouraged (PO Box 1062, Lumberton, NC 28359).

The family expresses appreciation to the Doctors, Residents, Nurses, and team members at UNC Southeastern Regional Medical Center 6th Floor, 3rd Floor, and ICU units, as well as the outstanding rehabilitation team at GlenFlora Rehabilitation Center.  He was well cared for during his extended illness.
