Gary Asburn Pope, 82, of Clarkton, North Carolina went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, October 7, 2021, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He leaves behind his loving wife, Mary Powell Pope, originally from Whiteville, son Michael Pope (Beth) of Clarkton, daughter Gail Warren (Chris) of Sunset Beach, and two grandchildren: Kara Adams (Eddie) of Graham, and Joshua Warren of Sunset Beach. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Kirby Smith Pope and Marie Bell Squires Pope, and brother Kenneth Pope, all from Clarkton.
Gary graduated from Clarkton High School in 1957, whereupon he enlisted in the US Air Force. After his discharge, he attended North Carolina State University and received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He began working with, and eventually retired from, Duke Energy in Raleigh, NC.
Gary’s retirement years were spent serving his church and community. As a member of First Baptist Church of Clarkton, he spearheaded many projects. He was also active with the Bladen Baptist Association, Habitat for Humanity, and Southeastern Carolina Crossroads. His efforts with these groups can be seen throughout Bladen County in residential homes and many handicapped access ramps.
The family will hold a private burial service. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the American Heart Association or the Alzheimer’s Association.
