Norwood Lesane Meggs, 84, U.S. Navy Veteran of Clarkton passed away on Thursday, February 10, 2022 at Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville. He is preceded in death by his parents, Walker Meggs and Hazel Bullard Meggs, his wife, Vernelle Strickland Meggs, two sisters, Marilyn Lewis, and Peggy Preetorious. Norwood is survived by sons, Woody Meggs (Sabine) of Clarkton and Chris Meggs (Holly) of Elizabethtown, daughter Paula Meggs of Whiteville, sister Opal Smith of Matthews, three grandchildren Matthew Meggs (Karlie), Emily Meggs, and Robert Meggs, and two great grandchildren Meredith and Malachi.
Norwood grew up near Clarkton and graduated from Clarkton High School. After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy and served for 2 years. During this time he also attended Edwards Military Institute and met his wife, Vernelle. Later, Norwood and his wife, who he loved dearly, would make their home in Bladen County, and raise three children. In his early years, he achieved a life long dream and received his pilot license. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His family was his life. Norwood will always be remembered as a good man who harmonized with anyone he met. He is now reunited with the love of his life where he longed to be.
The family will receive friends from 4-6 pm on Saturday, February 12, 2022 at Bladen Gaskins Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, February 13, 2022 at 1:00 pm in the Clarkton Cemetery with Rev. Mark Miller officiating.
At other times, the family will receive friends at the home of Chris and Holly Meggs, 2245 3rd Avenue in Elizabethtown.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Clarkton First Baptist Church or charity of one's choice.
