Charlotte, NC formerly of Bladenboro

Mr. Larry Bradley Skipper, of Charlotte, NC formerly of Bladenboro, passed away on Sunday, July 17, 2022, after a period of ill health. He was the son of Clifford B. Skipper and Allie C. Skipper and was born June 28, 1950. Mr. Skipper attended local schools in Bladenboro, NC and graduated Bladenboro High School in 1968. He then briefly attended East Carolina University and Southeastern Community College. In 1969, he entered St. Andrews Presbyterian College (now St. Andrews University) in Laurinburg, NC. He graduated in 1972 with a BA in Elementary Education. His teaching career began in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in August of 1972 at Amay James Elementary. From Amay James, he went on to additional Charlotte-Mecklenburg elementary schools, including Winterfield, Tryon Hills, Plaza Road, Albemarle Road, Bain and others. Additionally, Mr. Skipper participated in teaching the Academically Gifted in many schools during his career. He also became a teacher observer for CMS. In that position he coached and mentored new teachers about best practices and aided principals in the supervision of new teachers.

Leaving CMS, Mr. Skipper was asked to become a member of the Department of Public Instruction teams that assisted teachers and staff in low performing schools across North Carolina for two years. Returning to the teacher’s desk, he began work in Union County Public Schools including Western Union and Walter Bickett. He moved to Union Academy and taught in the charter school for several years. Lastly, Mr. Skipper ended his career in June of 2020 at New Salem Elementary. Mr. Skipper spent forty-eight years educating the children of North Carolina.

Mr. Skipper loved to travel and went on many trips to New York and various European and tropical locations including Puerta Vallarta, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Prague, Ireland, the West Coast, Montana, South Dakota, and others. Although, Mr. Skipper loved to see the world, he remained connected with his childhood classmates and always enjoyed coming home to family and friends. He was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Charlotte. An amusing storyteller, he will be missed by his many friends and acquaintances.

Mr. Skipper was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Margie and Georgia and one nephew, Mitchell. Survivors include his nieces, Jackie Bullard, Patti White, Denise Williams and his nephews Steve Evers and Ronnie Williams.  He is also survived by close friends Marian and Toby Vosburgh and their children.
