A beautiful woman with the kindest of hearts, Katie Lucille Nance Watson Jones, peacefully passed away after 99 years of life, on December 22, 2023. She took her final breaths at Sunrise of Silver Spring in Remembrance Care, where she resided the past 5 years. Lucille, as most called her, was born in Bladenboro, NC on April 23, 1924, to William Thomas Nance and Lou Helen Singletary Nance.
After graduating from Bladenboro High School, Lucille attended a business School in Charlotte, NC, and at the age of 18 she was recruited to work for the US government in Washington, DC. Until 1961, she worked at the Division of Language Services and was proudly instrumental in the typing of the Marshall Plan. Later, she spent many years working for NIH, until she retired at the age of 65.
Lucille’s life was filled with love after she married Evan William Watson, known to loved ones as Bill, and brought her two loving children, William Michael Watson and Lori Anne Watson, into the world. After the loss of her husband Bill in 1975, she was remarried 11 years later to Paul O. Jones, until his death in 1998.
She spent over 60 years of her life residing in Silver Spring, MD, where she showed off her many talents through hobbies such as making candy, wedding cakes, flower arrangements and gardening. She equally enjoyed traveling and shopping. Her kindness and love of people shined brightly always, but especially when she volunteered for Meals on Wheels and at the Montgomery General Hospital in Sandy Spring, MD.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Edwin Nance, Creighton Nance, and CD Nance, and her daughter, Lori Anne Watson, also preceded in death by nephews: Steve Nance, Bill Nance, Larry Nance & Bobby Nance and niece Jan Gooden. Lucille is survived by her son, William Michael (wife, Tracy) and grandson Chase Alexander Watson. She is beloved by many family members, including her nieces: Linda Beam, Helen Nance, and Rose Taylor, and nephews: Jimmy Nance and Gerry Nance.
Although our beloved, Katie Lucille Nance Watson Jones will be missed by those listed and multiple generations of nieces and nephews, her legacy of love, grace, and generosity lives on within all of us.
Please join us in her celebration of life at Richardson Baptist Church, 1907 Richardson Rd, Bladenboro, NC 28320, on January 8th from 2-2:45 pm for visitation followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 3:00 pm. Services will conclude in the Singletary Cemetery of Butters in Bladenboro.
