Julius "Gary" Herring

Julius Gary Herring, 91, of Elizabethtown, was a Korean War veteran, an instructor in the United States Army and also served the honor guard for Vice President, Richard Nixon. Gary passed away at Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville on Saturday, March 16, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Mattie Lovette Herring; siblings: Ralph Herring, Howard Herring, JC Herring, Grace Clark and Mae Gray.

Gary leaves behind his loving spouse of 66 years, Rose King Herring of the home; daughters: Shearon Skipper and husband Mike of Lumberton, Julie Naughton and husband Matthew of Matthews, NC, Kelly Edge and husband Alan of White Oak, Jan Davis and husband Greg of Matthews, NC; grandchildren: Michael Skipper, Joshua Skipper (Taylor), Kat Davis and Amber Davis.

Gary was a God-fearing man who loved his church and family. He was the Sunday school director in charge of scheduling of ushers and sang in the church choir. He was a star athlete in high school, ranging from football, basketball and baseball. He was also voted the most popular in high school. Gary retired from the joint municipal housing authority and he also took pleasure in his work as the summer youth supervisor for many years. He enjoyed watching UNC basketball, the Atlanta Braves, and westerns. In his spare time, he enjoyed camping, fishing, going to the beach, mountains and cooking out with his loved ones. 

The family will receive friends from 1-1:45pm on Tuesday, March 19^th at Elizabethtown Baptist Church Fellowship Hall followed by a funeral service at 2pm in the sanctuary with Reverend Rudy Ramphal officiating. Burial will follow in the Elizabethtown City Cemetery.
