Joseph Sauvinet Sr.

On Monday, October 24, 2022, Joseph Thomas Sauvinet Sr.,United States Marine Veteran, of Elizabethtown was called away to his eternal home at the age of 91. He joined the ones gone on before him, his lovely wife Martha Sauvinet, his parents, Albert Eugene Sauvinet Sr., and Mary Georgianna Rodrique, one brother Albert Eugene Sauvinet Jr., one sister Shirley Sauvinet and one grandson Paul Thomas Sauvinet. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Joseph Thomas Sauvinet Jr. (Gayle) and Cheryl Sauvinet Vieregge (Lee), both of Wilmington, three grandchildren Michele Surratt (Scott), Sonia Kennedy (Joe) and Traci McDowell (David) and four great grandchildren Joseph, Noah, Mackenzie, and Rachel.

Joseph was a soft spoken, loving man with a big heart. His family meant the world to him especially the love of his life, Martha. He grew up in New Orleans and served in the United States Marine Corps. Joseph loved to reminisce about his time in the service, his hometown and growing up with the “River Rats”. Folks looked forward to hearing one of the many stories he had to tell. After the service, Joseph was employed with General Electric and made a home with his wife in Elizabethtown, NC. He enjoyed drafting, drawing, and building projects.

Joseph was known for his grand sense of humor and his ability to bring a smile to everyone’s face. You could always find him having a cup of coffee in the mornings and chatting the day away with his friends and neighbors, especially his closest pals, James and Bessie Everette who were always there for him. Joseph will always be remembered for his protective nature, his forward thinking, and his compassionate spirit.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 -1:00 pm on Friday, October 28, 2022 at the Briar Branch Baptist Church in Elizabethtown followed by a funeral service at 1:00 pm with the Reverend Arnold Griffin officiating. Services will conclude in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Briar Branch Cemetery Fund, or the American Cancer Society.
