Daphne Jefferson Burney Horne, 89 of Clarkton, NC passed away 1:38 PM, Sunday, August 2nd , 2020 at her son's home in Fayetteville, NC. She is preceded in death by her parents Daniel Jefferson Burney (who died one month before her birth) and Hester Evelyn Clark Townsend Burney, brother Arthur Townsend, sister Rosa Lee Townsend McCall, sister Frances Rebecca Burney Clark and her husband Oliver Max Horne.

Daphne was a native of Bladen County, NC, the youngest child of Daniel and Hester Burney born January 17, 1931 in the farmhouse on the family farm in the Bluefield Community where she was also raised, and except for the last 8 months, lived her entire life. She graduated from Clarkton High School in 1949. Daphne was introduced to Max Horne (a sailor at the time) of Columbus County, NC by his cousin Avis Bullard, on Madison Street, Whiteville, NC in the summer of 1952 while he was home on leave. He returned on leave and married Daphne January 31, 1953. Their wedding was officiated by Rev. W. A. Crowe, Pastor of Bluefield Methodist Church, in the church parsonage, Elizabethtown, NC. Daphne was a caring and hard working woman. Nothing was more important than family to her and she loved every member with all her heart, whether blood relative or not. She cared for both her mother and her husband when their health failed until their deaths. Over the years, in addition to helping tend the farm, she worked at Carolina Power & Light Company, Jones Department Store, Fowler Simmons Department Store, Fowler Drug Store, E.J. Cox Company and finally retired from Wal-Mart after 17 years. She was an active member of Clarkton First Baptist Church most of her adult life.

Daphne leaves behind one son, Tim Horne (Angela) of Fayetteville; one daughter, Jane. Horne Miles (Robert) of Sanford; seven grandchildren: Nathan Horne of Colorado, Travis Horne of Fayetteville, Daniel Horne of Colorado, Sandi Miles Hanley (Ben) of Cary, Keith Miles (Joy) of Sanford, Robin Miles of Cary, and Traci Rhinebarger (Ryan) of Cary, and five great grandchildren: Gabe, Ellie, Francine, Chloe, Vaden, and one on the way in November (Harry).

A graveside service will be conducted by Pastor Shannon Ross at Brown Marsh Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 8561 Mercer Mill-Brown Marsh Road (State Road 1700), Clarkton, NC, 11:00 AM Saturday morning, August 8th. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Brown Marsh Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund c/o Clarkton Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 633, Clarkton, NC 28433.
